Job Title: Senior Support Worker

Reports to: Registered Manager
Purpose of the Role
The Senior Support Worker will actively promote the rights of young people as individuals and provide them with high-quality care in accordance with the policies and procedures of the organisation. This role is essential in leading the care team and maintaining a nurturing and structured residential environment that enables young people to thrive emotionally, socially, and academically. You will be responsible for supporting the Registered Manager and deputising in their absence.
Key Responsibilities
Care and Support
- Promote, safeguard, and protect the welfare of each young person.
- Build and maintain positive, trusting relationships that promote security and self-worth.
- Encourage young people to participate in education, activities, and independent living skills.
- Provide consistent and fair boundaries in behaviour management and apply agreed-upon sanctions when necessary.
- Lead in organising and supervising group activities, holidays, and daily routines.
- Assist young people through the transition process, including preparation for independence and leaving care.
- Promote healthy lifestyle choices including nutrition, hygiene, and physical activity.
- Support young people in developing and maintaining positive social networks.
Leadership and Teamwork
- Act as a role model and lead shifts, supporting team members and ensuring good childcare practices are consistently applied.
- Support and mentor junior staff, including assisting in inductions.
- Attend and assist in chairing staff meetings, following through on agreed actions.
- Collaborate with professionals such as social workers, education staff, and healthcare providers.
- Attend and contribute to child reviews, planning meetings, and external forums.
Administration and Compliance
- Compile detailed written records and reports including progress, incident, and review documentation.
- Maintain accurate records for each young person in line with organisational policies.
- Assist with financial management, including petty cash usage and record-keeping.
- Ensure all duties comply with Health and Safety at Work Act and internal safeguarding policies.
- Support the Registered Manager in maintaining regulatory standards and readiness for inspections.
Development and Supervision
- Participate in regular supervision and performance appraisals.
- Undertake ongoing training, including mandatory qualifications such as Diploma Level 3 or above in Residential Childcare.
- Make constructive use of feedback and seek professional development opportunities.
Safeguarding
You must ensure that safeguarding underpins every aspect of your practice, and that the safety of each young person is paramount. Any concerns must be reported immediately to a line manager or senior safeguarding lead.
